When you buy outdoor lights, always consider what you need them for. Outdoor sensor lights are usually needed for safety, security or to simply provide illumination when you are around. It is almost always never a good idea to purchase sensor lights for accent or spot lighting. Statues and landscapes do not move so motion sensor lights are useless in this function.
During the earlier summer months my backyard was a functional and safe place to socialize and relax without resorting to outdoor lights. Where I live the sun can still be shining until 9.30pm. In fact, during the month of June the skies became dark and the backyard become too dark to be safe right around the time I wanted some BBQ guests to leave so it worked out perfectly.
If safety is a concern then you should consider installing security lighting. You should keep it as far away from your living area as possible so it does not create a distraction. Task lighting should be used for specific functions like grilling or walking. Accent lighting is focused lighting that can be used to make a certain feature stand out, like an outdoor statue or other lawn object.
Decorative lighting will highlight your deck, patio, lawn and backyard. You would find it convenient to park on the driveway more if it was equipped with cool lights. You would be tempted to sit and relax on your deck or just laze for a while. You can have an evening chat with your family on the front lawn or just make your patio look welcoming to your guests. While it is not relevant to talk about curb appeal, your home will look more beautiful with decorative lighting.
