Since video is my profession I plan our living room layout around the TV and entertainment center (again to the chagrin of my wife). The TV is always placed at an angle away from the main window in the room in order to eliminate window reflections on the screen. Our living room lamps have shades that direct lighting downward and are not very translucent in order to minimize their reflections.
We expect an astonishing number of functions from our living room on a daily basis. It must house our guests stylishly, contain our children entertainingly and calm our stress soothingly at the end of it all. With so many demands, it is understandable that interior design experts recommend having multiple levels of living room lighting to accommodate all of the varied tasks involved.
Hang a Statement Fixture, living rooms with high ceilings can be difficult to decorate, and to light. In order to make the most of the high ceiling consider a large central fixture in a take-notice style. The key to hanging fixtures in rooms with high ceilings is to make sure they drop down from the ceiling so that they still feel like they are part of the room and you do not have to strain your neck to look up and see them. The sputnik chandelier in this living room by Robert Dana Design is large enough and low enough that it feels like a part of the seating area.
When choosing a chandelier, you need to choose a finish that complements the other fixtures in the room. In example, you would not mix silver and brass in the same room. It is also important to match finish with the colors of the room. Cool tones are complimented by black or silver finishes. Warm tones are complimented by brass or gold finishes.
