Shadows: One of the main problems with overhead lighting is that downward light will cast shadows and leave areas of darkness because there are places that it simply cannot reach. Areas such as those beneath cabinets will not be adequately lit by a ceiling light therefore additional lighting such as under cabinet lighting may become necessary. You will need to choose the appropriate lighting for each area, and this does not mean that it has to be expensive or large fittings.
Overall Wattage, multiply the square footage of your room times 1.5 for the recommended total ambient wattage. So for a 15’ x 18’ room, 15 x 18 x 1.5 = 405 watts. That’s the equivalent of ten 40-watt bulbs, rather bright to dine by, which is why most designers swear by dimmers. A dimmer is also great if you’re going to use the room for multiple purposes (and many people do these days—the dining room table doubles as a work and/or craft area). Style tip: Keep the chandelier relatively dim and supplement with recessed spot lights on either side or sconces for additional light when needed.
More Than Mere Night Lights. All children need some kind of night light even during their sleep. Light can help them feel safer and more secure. This setup is important for kids that are in their early ages where darkness can be a worrisome experience.
There is nowadays a wide choice of sizes and shapes in contemporary light fixtures. A long time ago all that was on offer was an electric light hanging from the center of the ceiling by an electric flex. Now there are table lamps, floor lamps, touch lamps, spot lights, pendant lights, and wall lights to name but a few. Deciding which is right for you is where the challenge is. I forgot, there are energy saving and eco friendly bulbs as well now.
