The halogen bulb which were quite popular up until around 2007, are also an incandescent lamp which operates at a high temperature. They are encased in protective glass and are more efficient energy converters than the old incandescent type. They have a reasonably good life span, but their use can be limited to areas where heat build up is not a problem.
In order to make you choice you will need to consider: The size of your kitchen: if you have a smaller space, or low ceilings, you will not want or need huge kitchen lighting fixtures. A design that is more flat against the roof, and perhaps wide will produce sufficient light without making the ceiling feel even lower or crowding the space. For larger kitchens there may be times when you want light in one area and not in others, and so the lighting will need to be wired to allow the choice.
