Installing even one post light in your yard can invite its own set of problems, such as wiring it, running a power cord to the house, digging a trench for the cord and leaving a scar in your lawn until the grass grows back. Hooking it into your power supply is risky business unless you really know what you are doing. Getting a professional electrician out there might be best, but those guys can charge you a pretty hefty price. And the costs of time and money and rise exponentially as you install more posts.
In the past people did not need many protection. Nowadays everything has changed a lot. So many people uses outdoor lighting to protect themselves. So they make a combination between protection and beautifying their yard.
It all just depends on your preference! A long line of post cap lights across an entire porch or backyard structure will likely provide enough light for a party or get together. Though, if you wanted to use lighting to highlight a certain spot, like the outdoor dining set, you will want to augment this lighting option with accent or hanging outdoor lights.
We started to create our outdoor lighting scheme about 5 years ago. My spouse and I were charmed by the simplicity and beautiful effect or the outdoor lights of a French restaurant in our town. Since that time we have experimented with many different variations of outdoor lighting designs. Our scheme is a work in progress and it gets tweaked each year. Some years we use a lot of string lights while in other years we use spot lights and twinkly lights. We generally tend to stick to white lights although we sometimes use the odd colored spotlight to great success.
